The best way to succeed in algebra is to learn it like you did favorite sport.
Start from the basics. Never try the harder problems if you haven't tried the basics. Never skip chapters from your mathematics book.
Train with a buddy. Get a 'study buddy' and meet regularly until you're sure of the subject. After guidance and regular hard work, you will see that you will help your buddy more than he does. Your classmate can explain things better than your teacher (or trainer), so try and study with a batch mate. His doubts can be yours too, and anyways, studying in a group is much more fun.
Never give up. When you're not able to solve the problems, the best way out seems to be keeping the books away for a while. Well, okay, go ahead, but time yourself and decide how much that "little while" is going to be. Don't make it forever! Everything grows from basics to expertise; if you don't understand chapter 1 you will probably not understand chapter 2 and 3 either. No one becomes an Aryabhatta on the first day, so failures are obvious, but don't loose your confidence.

Never hesitate to ask questions. Don't apologize and never worry about looking stupid; probably other people have exactly the same question, if everyone shies away, the doubts will never be solved. Asking a question is a good habit, in or out of class, from elder or younger.
Do your homework religiously. Always study even if the teacher didn't give you any homework. Be your own teacher. Soon, you'll move a step ahead your class. If you are thorough with the days work, try the next topic yourself.
Practice regularly. The only way to master any mathematics field is to practice. Until you practice you would know about exceptional cases and quick solutions.
Build your own time table. An hour in class isn't enough if you're struggling with the easiest of problems. Make a schedule for yourself. Others can only guide you; you have to build success for yourself.
